Pain

Pain is an unpleasant experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage.  It may arise from accident or injury, cancer, arthritis, asthma, or even emotional distress. Pain is associated with many illnesses.  This leaflet refers mainly to pain caused by orthopaedic conditions and trauma (injuries).

How can Chinese medicine help with pain?

Chinese Medicine offers effective pain relief using a variety of treatments from herbs taken orally to herbs applied externally such as oils, plasters and lotions, from massage (acupressure), manipulation to acupuncture.

Of all Chinese medicine treatments, acupuncture is the best known in the West for pain management: many would remember the sensational media coverage in the 1970s of acupuncture anesthesia where an open chest operation was performed with only acupuncture needles to control the pain.

Pain, whether acute or chronic can be treated by Chinese acupuncture and herbal medicine.  The focus of treatment will be on eliminating pain completely or as much relief as possible, to improve the ability to deal with pain, to regulate the emotions, to increase energy levels, and to increase the ability to perform everyday functions.

Sports injuries are a common cause for orthopaedic pain, which often involves muscles, tendons, and bones/joints all of which respond particularly well to acupuncture.  With a fresh injury, sufficient investigation must be carried out prior to Chinese medical treatment in order to eliminate any damage that may require surgery or other necessary treatment. Generally speaking, the sooner the treatment starts after an injury, the better the results.  However, Chinese medicine is also very successful in treating chronic pain and sports injuries, although the course of treatment will be considerably longer

*Neuralgia - “nerve pain” - as in migraine, sciatica, shingles and certain types of neck pain also respond well to acupuncture

Acupuncture Trigger Points and Musculoskeletal Pain: 3rd Ed.

The third edition of this highly successful book describes how musculoskeletal pain can be simply and effectively treated by acupuncture. It gives a comprehensive account of current knowledge concerning two very commonly occuring musculoskeletal pain disorders - the myofascial trigger point pain syndrome and the fibromyalgia syndrome. The author, after having given a detailedaccount of the neurophysiology of pain in general, discusses at length the pathophysiology of myofascial trigger point nociceptive pain and the rationale for alleviating it by means of the acupuncture technique of superficially applied dry needle-evoked nerve stimulation at trigger point sites. Biomedical Acupuncture for Pain Management

Blending science & practice, this unique text and clinical manual simplifies acupuncture treatment for pain management & trauma rehabilitation for integration with conventional medical care. Detailed guidance enables conventional health care professionals to quickly understand and incorporate acupuncture therapy principles for pain management into their practice. The unique Integrative Neuromuscular Acupoint System (INMAS) simplifies treatment by focusing on only 24 acupoints, out of the hundres of existing acupoints, thus creating a standardised protocol that can be customised for each patient.
