CMIR - Chinese Medical Institute and Register

Acupuncture is a widely accepted form of therapy and is increasingly being incorporated into the Western medical environment, both in hospital as well as in general practice. The New York Times senior editor, James Reston’s report on acupuncture anaesthesia during the historic Nixon visit to China in 1972, gave impetus to the spread of acupuncture usage internationally.

According to a survey in the Times newspaper, over ninety percent of British doctors would recommend acupuncture to their patients as a complimentary form of treatment. More than a thousand doctors practice a form of acupuncture in the UK. Elsewhere in Europe. The number of doctors who practice acupuncture is even greater than in the UK, with France numbering more than 5000 and Germany numbering over 4000. Acupuncture is becoming a modern ‘medicine science’ with the advance of electro-acupuncture, laser acupuncture and TENS pain management.

Chinese Medicine as a comprehensive medical system has hitherto remained largely obscure to the rest of the world, except for East and South Asia; however the systematic modernisation of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China, and its integration with Western medicine has necessitated a considerable reaction from various government bodies and pharmaceutical industry as well as the medical profession are increasingly concerned with the unsafe and unqualified practice of Chinese Medicine in the West. A consensus decision has been reached to increase the level of education in the medical profession, and to set up a safety protocol for Chinese Medical practice and medicinal products.

Set up jointly by the AcuMedic Foundation and the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, the Institute forms part of this educational programme to ensure optimum standards. The Institute is dedicated to the modernisation of Chinese Medicine, and its proper integration into conventional mainstream medical practice. Focusing on educational projects of a high standard, it maintains a register of properly qualified practitioners who abide by a set Code of Practice. The other functions of the CMIR are to provide a forum for academic exchange and public awareness of the benefits and development of Chinese Medicine. The Institute also has a publishing programme to facilitate the above aims.
