The guide is intended largely for a North American readership and is aimed not only at doctors and members of the healing professions, but also at lay people, for whom it is intended as a practical guide.

It is based on experiences and prescriptions used in Germany for many years, supplemented by US-American remedies and suggestions for use, taking into account the available scientific literature.

It is small in size and colour-coded to make it easy to use.

The gray section (p.1-32) covers the fundamentals of phytotherapy and general guidelines for the use of herbal medicines.

The green section (33-131) consists of plant summaries arranged in alphabetical order. Each summary give the following information (where known): general comments, synonyms, pharmacology, indications, contraindications, dosage and duration of use, adverse effects, herb-drug interactions, common misconceptions, summary assessment, and references from the literature; warnings are given in green.

The blue section (132-281) covers the herbal treatment of diseases, grouped as follows: cardiovascular diseases; respiratory diseases; diseases and dysfunctions of the digestive organs; diseases of the urogenital tract; diseases and disorders of the nervous system; debility, fatigue, adaptive and functional disorders; immunodeficiency diseases; rheumatic diseases; gynaecological diseases; paediatric diseases; dermatological diseases; and open wounds and blunt traumas. For each disease, notes are provided on clinical considerations, recommended herbal remedies (overview), and range of applications. Warnings are flagged in blue.

The red section (282-323) covers practical applications: herbal hydrotherapy (balneotherapy) and standard treatments (including wraps, washes, poultices etc.) for cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, nervous, rheumatic and systemic, paediatric and skin diseases and wounds.

The Appendix (324-491) includes a list of herbal oils for musculoskeletal diseases, Latin-English and English-Latin plant glossaries, tabulated data on dosages, addresses of professional organizations and suppliers, references and resources, as well as an index.
