'Plain Talk About Acupuncture' is a wide-ranging, intelligently written and superbly researched book. It contains everything from common sense (plain talk), to explanations of such things as endorphis and placebo effect, to the latest on veterinary acupuncture.

Every page is full of the author's fascination with the subject, and reveals her interest in the down-to-earth nature of acupuncture.

There are many examples of patients' experiences that give a real-life view of the kinds of condictions that can be treated, and what can be expected from acupuncture treatment.

Because this is a patients' "guidebook" there is a large proportion of practical case-oriented information - what a treatment feels like, how to find a reliable acupuncturist, and so on.

The substance abuse chapter of this book is uniquely valuable to our field. Ms. Mitchell has resisted the temptation to refer to substance abuse only in terms of symptom relief or stress relief.

She emphasizes the need for counselling as well as acupuncture. Her discussion is oriented to the needs 'and' the ambivalence that people feel when they consider seeking substance abuse treatment.

Ms. Mitchell's chapter is written with great sensitivity concerning the critical issues peoples feel when beginning substance abuse treatment.
