Description

Consists of eight series of case studies, each focusing on a variety of patterns associated with common clinical disorders or symptoms category. A useful work for students as well and for the developing practitioners.- By Jingyi/Xuemei.(1998) 324pp

Companion volume to ‘Acupuncture Patterns & Practice’. This is a practical, clinically oriented presentation of differential diagnosis and treatment in traditional Chinese medicine. It consists of eight series of case studies, each focusing on a variety of patterns associated with a common clinical disorder of symptom category: asthma, facial disorders, poor appetite, abdominal and epigastric pain, abnormal bowel movements, abnormal urination, constraint disorders, hypochondrial and intercostals pain.

In each of the 40 cases studies, the authors systematically analyse the patient’s presentation, from the cause and site of the disorder to the underlying theory of the case. The pathogenesis, pattern of disease, treatment principle, and modalities of treatment - including both herbs and acupuncture - are described and analysed in considerable detail. The authors, themselves clinicians, then pose a number of questions that are likely to confront the practitioner as he/she attempts to differentiate one related case from another. This method will be of particular benefit to the developing practitioner, as well as students who are making the transition from the classroom to the clinic.

Like the first volume, this volume includes more than 100 charts that organise and present in graphic form what has been explained in the text. Each chapter concludes with a diagnostic overview or ‘tree’ that summarizes the process of different diagnosis for the patterns associated with that particular disorder or category of symptoms.

Rounding out this book is a brief appendix on cooking herbs, a bibliography of source materials, an index of herbal formulas and acupuncture points mentioned in the text, and an extensive general index.
