The main body of the work deals with clinical approaches to indications. Presented in a clear A-Z index with clear diagrams throughout the 600 pages. - By Stephan Palos and Paul Zmiewski(2003)
The authors have made a contribution that is useful and valuable both clinically and academically. This book presents 160 biomedical pathoconditions, denoting for each the main point combination formulary (using alpha-numeric point name designations), the symptom-related points, the Chinese Pinyin name, and the locational terrain for point finding. Each page has precise and elegant two-tone drawings of the anatomical locations of the given points. Therapeutic recommendations for treatment schedule, stimulus, and needle manipulation and retention are specified for each condition. Remarks and source literature citations round off the presentation.
Following the same format, further sections present treatment for various compulsive addictive disorders. There are diagrams and functional arrangements of emergency points, "grand points," hua tuo points, important symptom points, shu, mu, yuan, luo, xi-cleft, and hui points of the channels; also the extraordinary vessels and their confluent points, the yin- and yang-crossing points, and the five-phase restraining and engendering cycles.
The array of contents continues: There are two-tone illustrations of the 12 channel pathways and points on the body, and the various indications for these channel points. There is a short pathology of traditional Chinese medicine taken from the zhongyi neike that succinctly describes both exogenous and endogenous pathological factors and their symptomatology. A further section covers Chinese auricular acupuncture with many easy-to-use charts, tables, and diagrams, therapeutic recommendations for diseases of the various organ systems, and an alphabetic index of the ear points. There are nicely rendered duotones of the body points (front, back, lateral). There are summaries of point combinations with their functions, of pulse palpation and diagnostic utility, of five-phase treatment approaches.
The ease of use afforded by the two-color layout, the extensive inclusion of elegantly rendered illustrations, and the concise tabular presentation of the bulk of the material makes this a must for quick clinical reference or academic review.
