If someone you love has just been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, you may not know where to turn. According to author Daniel Kuhn, the early stages of Alzheimer’s can be the most difficult time for relatives and friends because they often don’t know much about the disease, or how they can be of help. This highly practical book fills the information gap. It is divided into three sections:

* how Alzheimer’s begins—causes and early symptoms
* how to help a loved one with the disease
* how families & caregivers can help themselves

The new edition contains updated information on risk factors, treatments, and potential means of prevention. The author includes a new chapter, “Voices of Experience,” composed of reflections by family members who have lived through the experience of Alzheimer’s disease, with ideas about what worked and what didn’t in their handling of their family member with the disease. Also included is information about two new drugs approved since 1999 and the decision by the federal government to cover the cost of counseling and other health related services through Medicare. Resources are updated, and the National Family Caregiver Support Program, enacted in 1999, is explained.
