In China today, a movement is under way to integrate modern Western and traditional Chinese medicines. This is called fu zhong xi yi or zhong xi yi jie, combined Chinese-Western medicine, or, more simply, xin yi, the New Medicine. In this book, Dr. Alon Marcus describes the treatment of acute abdominal syndromes by this New Medicine. Using a combination of Western disease diagnosis and staging and traditional Chinese pattern diagnosis, a rational methodology is presented for discriminating those conditions requiring surgery and those suitable for more conservative and less potentially iatrogenic treatments, such as herbal medicine and acupuncture. Also included are protocols combining modern internal medicine with traditional Chinese internal medicine, herbal poultices and acupuncture. Dr Marcus learned this methodology and these protocols while interning in Guangzhou, PRC, in 1985.
